How to Test Your Typing Speed for Free Online
Many job descriptions list a required typing speed that the employer wants the potential employee to have. Whether you're looking for a traditional job or a work at home position, it's important to know what your typing speed is, just in case an interviewer asks this during a job interview. Here are a few ways you can test your typing speed online, for free.

TypingTest.com allows its typing test takers to choose the duration of the test (choose from 1- 2- or 3-minute tests), as well as the excerpt that you test on. What I like about this test: I like being able to choose a longer typing test, to get a better overall view of my typing speed. What I didn't like about testing my typing speed on this site: because there's only 5 excerpts to test on, you can only use this site five times to get an accurate picture of your typing skills, because if you know what to expect on a test, the results could be skewed. Also, test-takers are not allowed to correct typos during the test.

typeonline.co.uk offers up many random typing tests. The tests are excerpts taken from random books. The good thing about this test: it allows you to go back and correct incorrectly spelled words and other typos. The drawback: you have to manually click "start" and "stop," which --depending on your speed with a mouse-- could affect your outcome.

Learn2Type.com offers typing tests, printable certificates, as well as a free account to help you polish and improve your typing skills. Pros: They offer several random tests, and they follow through and help you improve your typing speed after you've taken the test. Cons: I couldn't find any.
