Affiliate marketing is an Internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays an affiliate for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. An affiliate marketer can use a combination of techniques to promote an affiliate website and/or link. However most marketing techniques do not generate enough through traffic to generate a number of sales but there are several proven methods to increase traffic that will result in increased affiliate sales.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An affiliate account with at least one online business.
  1. Step 1

The most successful affiliate marketers demonstrate their expertise on the products they promote. In order to become an expert they often purchase the product to gain first-hand experience using it or thoroughly research it until they become familiar and knowledgeable enough to promote it.

  2. Step 2

The more industrious affiliate often write an ebook, which will include an advertisement and a link to their website. The ebook can be given away free or used as an incentive to sign up for their newsletter.
An ebook can also be submitted to the ebook directories and offered to other webmasters for inclusion on their website.

  3. Step 3

Most merchants will provide pre-written ads for their affiliates to use. However, many marketers write their own ad, or make significant changes to the one that's pre-written, so that their ad will stand out from the others. Done properly, this will give them a great advantage over those affiliates that are using the same ad as everyone else.

  4. Step 4

Many successful marketers join chat rooms, forums, and discussion boards. They are careful not to try and sell initially, but during their chat, mention the product their promoting and describe its benefits. If there is interest in their product, they then refer them to the product through their affiliate link.

When using these, affiliate marketers include their signature line at the end of any comments that they make, because this will then provide a further link back to their site. Most try to stick to forums that are on the same topic as what they are trying to sell because they not only learn about their potential customer's desires, but they are able to further establish themselves as an expert in the field.

  5. Step 5

Most recently affiliate marketers have been using Blogs as a great way of ensuring they get back links to their site. They simply start a blog
on their website and post to it several times a week. It is very much like a news page for their web site.

  6. Step 6

An older method to gain traffic is the Link Exchange. A Link exchange is when a marketer exchanges links with other websites that have complimentary products or services to their own. It not only gives direct traffic from the link, but helps to increase ranking in search engines.

Tips & Warnings
  • Write good articles and press releases about your website or link page. The goal is to get keywords into the article that will send people to your site.
  • Use social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook to advertise your website but be very subtle. People are not interested in getting hit over the head with commercials.
  • Put your website or link page address in your email signature.
  • Watch for any grammar/spelling errors on your webpage or link page. No one will stick around your site if it has obvious (and avoidable) errors on it.
  • Proofread!
  • Avoid using mass Search Engine submission software and services. They don't work well and can get you penalized or banned by the larger search engines.
  • Avoid using pop-up or pop-under windows they do work for awhile but any traffic they send will fade away as people get annoyed enough to complain about you.
  • Don't Automatically Assume Big Affiliate Networks Are Better. Large established merchants like Home Depot, Best Buy, and Walmart are massive and everyone knows what they can get from them. Try to find affiliate programs that are unique or lesser known. Small company's that are just starting to sell internationally.
