Step 1
Compare office visit prices among Veterinarians. Washington Consumers' Checkbook (Checkbook.org) a non-profit consumer authority, found Vet's prices ranging from $90 to $370 to spay a medium sized dog.
-
Step 2
If your animal needs medication, instead of filling it at the Vet's office shop around for the most economical price to save money on pet care.
-
Step 3
Buy quality pet food for your aninal. Like humans, animals thrive on nutritious quality food. Buying nutritious food will help you save money on pet care in the long run. Purchase quality food in bulk.
-
Step 4
Learn basic animal care techniques. Have your Vet teach you how to clip your cat's claws. Wash and brush your animal yourself to save money on pet care.
-
Step 5
Swap with another pet owner when you are going out of town to save money on kennel fees.
-
Step 6
Consider purchasing pet insurance. The price of pet care has skyrocketed with new medical techniques for animals that were once only used on people. Animals are now candidates for MRI's, kidney transplants etc. You can save money on pet care if your animal has health issues.

on 12/8/2008 I thought vet meds would cost the same at all vets since they don't write a prescription but rather just hand me the meds. But that's an interesting thought. I'll have to check that out next time. Also, at Banfield you can buy a healthcare plan. It costs about the same as what I would have done, but gives more plus free office visits for a year.
