Building a fire is an almost impossible task for some. Have you attempted time and time again - only to end up with a mess, no fire, and people laughing at you? Don't let this discourage you from trying again. If you're one of those people who can't seem to start a fire, this is the article for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Paper
    Paper

First, you'll take paper (this can be newspaper or any other sheets of paper) and wad several pieces into balls.

  3. Step 3

Place the wadded paper balls in the bottom of the wood stove.

  4. Step 4

Take your match or lighter and set the paper on fire.

  5. Step 5
    Kindling

Add small pieces of kindling and/or bark on top of that.

  6. Step 6
    Flames Increasing

    Allow the flames to increase.

  7. Step 7

Now, put a (small) piece of wood on top of that making sure not to smother out the fire you have started. If you notice the fire flickering out, simply leave the lid open a tiny bit so some air can circulate and make the fire stronger.

  8. Step 8
    Wood Pile

Once the fire is really burning strongly, add a bigger piece of wood.

  9. Step 9

You also need to take the poker and stir the fire up a bit to keep it alive.

  10. Step 10
    Fire Burning

Now that you've built a fire that lasts, you can cook something delicious or enjoy a cozy evening with your favorite person/people!

  11. Step 11
    Fire Extinguisher

Building fires is serious. Be careful not to burn yourself and keep a (working) fire extinguisher nearby.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful to use a mit, hand towel, or something to grab hold of the wood stove door or lid handle.
  • Never leave a burning fire unattended.
