Twice a year is a good routine to develop when it comes to cleaning out your clothes closet. Not only does it allow you to switch seasonal clothing around as needed, but it allows you to purge and donate unused items that are only wasting your space.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 boxes
  • broom
  • vacuum
  • storge containers
  1. Step 1

Begin with 3 large containers, one marked for donate, one marked for trash and one marked for repair. Line those containers up in a location that's easy for you to reach from a central sorting location, typically a bed.

  2. Step 2

Remove everything from the closet. Sweep the ceiling and walls down, paying particular attention to the corners and the angles where the walls meet and where the walls meet the ceiling to remove dust, debris and cobwebs. Vacuum the closet floor.

  3. Step 3

Begin the organizing process by returning only those items that you want to keep and have used in the past year. If it's been longer than a year since you've used it or worn it, it needs to be donated or tossed out.

  4. Step 4

Sort those belongings that are not going back into the closet into the appropriate container. Donate items in good condition, trash items that are worn out and separate items that need repairs made before you can use them.

  5. Step 5

Use shoe trees or over the door hangers to organize things like shoes, slippers, slips, stockings, panty hose or jewelry that you may want to store in your closet.

  6. Step 6

Place sweater racks on the shelf so you can stack sweaters without them tipping over. For small closets, you can also store t-shirts in the same manner.

  7. Step 7

Use clear storage containers to keep odds and ends tidy and still accessible. Clear storage containers allow you to view what's inside of the containers so you can find them when you need to do so.

Tips & Warnings
  • For small closets, store out of season clothing in rubber totes in another location such as a laundry room or a basement. Rubber totes that are water proof will keep out damp, odors and bugs so you can be assured your clothing won't be damaged.
  • Take digital photographs and make an itemized list of the things you're donating for tax purposes.
