Things You'll Need:
- You
- A dog
-
Step 1
Dogs loved to be rubbed for praise. I don't personally use treats to get my dog to do tricks, but every dog and owner is different.
-
Step 2
When ever my dog wanted me to rub his tummy I would bend down and rub his tummy. Then I got the idea to started telling him to give me a high five, and I would grab his paw and tap it to my hand. I did that every day for weeks.
-
Step 3
Again I would bend down to rub his tummy and I would say, "High five" and tap his paw on my hand. Then I would say, "Good Boy" in a high pitch voice. Dogs know praise by the pitch of your voice too.
-
Step 4
Finally when he understood high five well enough. I taught him to jump up on to legs and give me the a high five like a person. Repetition and praise is a major key for any pet training.
-
Step 5
My family love to get a High Five from our dog Brownie.

on 3/31/2009 I like that you don't rely on treats. Great ideas.

on 1/15/2009 I'll let my son read this. It'll be better than when he tried to teach our mini doxie to jump off the ironing board. Thanx!
