You want to be a writer or a poet, but you don't know where to start. You have excuses why you can't write or you don't have enough time to write. Start writing today, writers write. A creative writing habit is sometimes difficult to start but once you get started it's difficult to stop. Write, write, write!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen or Pencil
  • Notebook
  • 10 minutes a day
  • No more excuses
  • Passion for creative writing
  • Love of the written word
  1. Step 1

Start writing today. Don't wait until you get a better job, have more free time, or win the lottery. Even 10 minutes of daily writing will make you a better writer.

  2. Step 2

Set a timer for your daily writing habit; keeping track of your writing in a journal or in your creative writing blog can help with accountability. If you feel blocked set a timer and free-write for 10 minutes before you start your novel, poem or essay. Writing prompts are available online and in writing craft books.

  3. Step 3

Take a writing class or join a critique group. Having the support of fellow writers can be a confidence booster for writers with low self-esteem. There are thousands of writing groups online that cost nothing to join.

  4. Step 4

Read writing craft books, read other writers and poets work, research markets for your writing. And when and if you're ready-- submit your creative works.

  5. Step 5

Don't ever give up! If you have the passion for creative writing, keep writing. Successful writers understand it's persistance and passion that got them published.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stop the excuses, writers write!
  • Surround yourself by positive people who support your writing.
  • Treat your writing as an art and practice, practice, practice you will get better the more you write.

  • Start a writing group yourself if there's not one available in your area or join an online creative writing group.
  • You can be a writer and never be published, it's up to you!
  • Creative writing may be addictive for some people.
