Acne can strike at any age. With acne comes the risk of scarring and discoloration. Depending on the severity, you can treat acne scars at home or with a dermatologist to effectively fade or even remove the scarring.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with prevention. If you don’t have your acne under control, the chance for reoccurring scars will just defeat your scar removal efforts. Mild forms of acne can usually be treated with over the counter products and a daily skin care regime. For severe acne, consider a visit with a dermatologist to control or eradicate the condition.

  2. Step 2

Consider microdermabrasion. Deeper forms of microdermabrasion are administered by dermatologists, doctors or at spas and involve removing the upper layer of skin with special crystals or an abrasion tool. This resurfaces the upper layers of the skin resulting in a reduction in scars, wrinkles and discoloration. Home microdermabrasion kits are available, but they aren’t usually as effective as those administered by dermatologists.

  3. Step 3

Try products with hydroxy acids. Glycolic, alpha and beta hydroxy acids are skin exfoliants that remove the dead upper layer of skin causing faster cell regeneration. Acids are especially effective in fading and removing decolonization due to acne scars and sun damage. Chemical peels are an example of acid skin treatments.

  4. Step 4

Look into lasers. For severe or resistant acne scars, consider laser treatment. The scarred skin is lasered or burned and requires a dermatologist or doctor to administer the procedure. Laser treatments have also been shown some effectiveness on acne as well as acne scars.

  5. Step 5

Try lemon juice. For superficial scarring or discolored skin, apply lemon juice to the affected areas daily. Lemon juice not only has skin renewing acids, it also has bleaching properties. Do not go into the sun immediately after applying lemon juice as this can accelerate the bleaching process causing white spots.
