Clean Faux Flowers and Plants

Many people like having plants and flowers in their homes. Since live plants require care and live flowers only last a week or so, people have resorted to having faux, silk, or artificial plants and flowers. This article will list a few ideas on how to clean your plants and flowers.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The easiest way to clean faux plants and flowers is to dust them the same way you dust everything else in your house. Take the plants and flowers outside and wipe them with a rag or feather duster. If you use dusting solution, make sure you test it in an inconspicuous place to make sure it does not discolor your artificial plant or flower before using it on the whole thing.

  2. Step 2

Another option for cleaning silk flowers and plants is to use compressed air. Take your plants and flowers outside and spray them with compressed air, which should remove most of the dust. You should be able to find compressed air in the computer department of most stores, or use the air compressor you already have in your garage.

  3. Step 3

Consider using an ammonia based cleaner (such as Windex), vinegar, plain water, or dishwashing liquid on artificial plants and flowers. All plants are different, so test them in an inconspicuous place to make sure it does not discolor your plant or flower before using it on the whole thing. If your plant tolerates water, you can spray it with a garden hose or wash it in the kitchen sink.

  4. Step 4

You can vacuum your silk plants and flowers to remove the dust and cobwebs. Use a vacuum attachment with a brush so you don't pull the leaves into the vacuum.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't leave your artificial plants and flowers in a hard to reach place for years without cleaning them. At a minimum, they should be cleaned once a month, but preferably once a week.
  • If at all possible, clean them outside so the dust gets out of your home, not on your floor.

on 9/25/2009 We also recommend a hair dryer set on "cool" and to dust your faux florals upside down so the dust doesn't settle back on the flowers or in the container!
