How to Look for Signs Your Teen is Trying to Hide Pot Smoking from a Urine Drug Test
Performing a drug test on your teen at home can help put your mind at ease if you suspect that they have been going down the wrong path. Unfortunately, there are plenty of products available that can aid your teen in covering up his marijuana use during a urinalysis. It's not always easy to tell if your teen is trying to trick the drug test, but simple observation and preventative measures can make it more difficult for the teen to hide his drug use.
Things You'll Need
- THC-sensitive urine drug testing kit
- Bluing tablet (optional)
- Digital thermometer

1
Remove any common bathroom items that can be used to adulterate a urine test. Eye drops, hand soap, bleach and other cleaning products have been reputed to provide a false negative when added to the sample.
-
2
Obtain a fresh urine sample. Require that the teen tell you when the sample is finished so you can open the door before they flush the toilet or wash their hands. If you hear the sound of running water before you have entered the room, disqualify that sample and try again later. Many drug users try to water down their sample to help dilute the THC metabolites present in their urine. If the teen has cheated in the past, have a person of the same sex present in the bathroom. Placing a bluing tablet in the tank of your toilet before administering the urine test will deter a drug user from using toilet water to dilute the sample.

3
Check the temperature of the urine with a digital thermometer. Recently excreted urine will be close to 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is above 99 degrees, check to see if the teenager has a fever. If not, assume that the sample has been tampered with and discard. Any temperature under 96 degrees is highly suspect and should not be used for urinalysis.

4
Observe the coloration of the urine sample. Many drug users will consume large amounts of water before the drug test to help flush out their system, resulting in a specimen that is very light in color. While this is not a definite sign of tampering, it should be taken into consideration before accepting the sample. Some users will take B vitamins to dye their urine bright yellow to hide this technique. If your teen does not take vitamins but has very yellow urine, consider this a sign of tampering and discard the sample.

5
Perform the urinalysis at home if it passes the color and temperature tests. If it does not, wait several hours to procure a second specimen. Procuring a second sample may also result in a more accurate test if your teen is using an over-the-counter screening product to hide the THC in her system (these products only last for a couple of hours).

Tips & Warnings
Certain medications and dietary supplements can result in a false positive. Most at-home drug testing kits will provide information on where to send the sample for professional analysis to be certain of the result.
