Instructions

    • 1

You need a plastic pail or bin with a tight fitting lid to begin building your compost bin. This can be anything from a 5 gallon bucket to a large plastic garbage can. A container that is at least 2 feet tall will give you enough room to work. The container needs a lid to keep moisture in and animals out of your compost bin.

    • 2

Now you need to drill (with a large drill bit) or cut (with a box cutter) several holes in the bottom and sides of your compost bin. Depending on the size of your holes, you should place them 6-12 inches apart. This will help with air circulation which is necessary for composting. If rodents are a problem in your area, cover the outside of the compost bin with window screen secured with a strong duct tape or epoxy.

    • 3

Place the container in your back yard out of direct sunlight to prevent drying out the compost, but in a location where it will get enough sun to help heat the compost (heat speeds up the composting process.) If you live in a home or apartment without a backyard this compost bin can also be placed on a balcony or deck.

    • 4

Add twigs or straw to the bottom of your compost bin. Next add a thin layer of soil from your garden (or store-bought soil if you don't have a backyard).

    • 5

Now, you have built your very own compost bin and are ready to start adding kitchen scraps and yard clippings! See the resources section below for instructions on how to start composting including what kind of materials to add to your compost bin!

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to keep in mind the about of storage space you have when selecting a plastic container in step 1.
