Blank printed checks

With all the banking costs going up these days the cost of printed checks has become an expense that can make a dent in the budget. Since it is very easy to make your own checks, why not save the extra money? Here are a few guidelines on how to produce your own blank checks for business or personal use.

Instructions

    • 1

Printing your own checks is a very easy thing to do.

    • 2

Decide the size checks you want to use; personal or business size checks.

    • 3

Buy the blanks at a stationary store or warehouse or over the internet. You can even find blank checks by the case. If you want to spend a little more, you can find checks that are pre-printed with a selection of background colors, designs and pictures.

      Checks printed on blank paper

Checksoft, CheckMark and many other companies offer a wide selection of both software and blank checks. Some of the office supply stores carry their own brands of check paper.

      Decorative checks are available

There are also a number of sites on the internet that will print just about any design you could want on checks of your choice. Most cost less than the bank printing fees, but will cost more, of course, than doing it yourself.

    • 6

Make sure your checks are compatible with both your printer and any financial software you will be using.

    • 7
      Input your information.

The software programs are very simple. You basically chose a template and fill out all the requested information. You will need your bank information, including the routing numbers and account numbers. These will be found at the bottom of your regular checks in that squarish bold lettering called the Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR). Follow the rest of the directions in your software until you have everything input that will be needed on the face of your check. You will simply be supplying the same information you will see printed on your existing checks.

Some programs even allow you to import your own pictures, backgrounds or logos to decorate your checks.

    • 9

Make sure you run a test before starting your printing run. Then print up however many checks you want to use at a time!

In response to jpwriter: Yes, it is suggested that you use a slightly more expensive magnetic ink for ease of reading in some banks. I have never used it, nor have any other people I know who print their own checks and we've had no problems with regular ink over the years.

I haven't gotten this far in my business plan yet, but it's great info. You can save money and print checks at home. It seems I had heard something about the ink though, but I can't remember what it was. Great, helpful article.

This is great! I hardly use checks anymore, but it would be nice to customize them!
