These easy-to-follow tips -which require no exercise (wohoo!)-will help you prevent or loose the Freshman 15!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • microwave
  • refrigerator
  • reusable waterbottle (ex: Nalgene/ Sigg)
  1. Step 1

A lot of the notorious 15 comes from the late-night (and often drunken) impulse to order food. There might not be a way to stop those impulses but having a stash of "Domino's-replacers" for those post-drinking late-night cravings will save you money and a few pounds. Here are my suggestions:

a)Amy’s Kitchen Burritos (http://www.amys.com): one burrito has avg 250 calories, is very filling, and has half the fat of two of those tiny slices of Domino’ s pizza. They are all natural and low in sodium. Microwavable.

b)Progresso Microwave Bowls: These great soups are easy, cheap, and only 200 calories.

c)Thai Kitchen Noodle Carts (http://www.thaikitchen.com): At under $3.00 each these dishes are fairly low in fat and calories. Microwavable.

  2. Step 2

While there is no way to get around the beer belly (if you choose to drink) one tip is to drink as many glasses of water as alcohol to stay hydrated and somewhat healthy. Also, drinking water will relieve or prevent a hangover so the more exercise inclined people can actually make it to the gym on Sunday.

  3. Step 3

Poor food choices in the school cafeteria is the third culprit. It is hard to eat well when the dining hall uses tons of salt, offers burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches all day, and the food never seems to fill you up. Here is what you can do:

    a) Eat lots of fiber- eating an apple before one of your meals will give you fiber and fill you up. Another way to get fiber is to eat whole wheat pasta and bread.

    b) Drink lots of water- dehydration can often be confused with hunger

    c) Cut back on Soda ESPECIALLY DIET- although the calories in a regular Pepsi can be frightening, studies show that the sugar substitute in diet sodas (besides being unhealthy to begin with) increases your sweet tooth and makes you crave more sugar.

    d) Make smart choices- don't go for the veggies with butter but rather the plain ones. Also try using Olive Oil and vinegar on your salad instead of Ranch a few times.

** Try to eat like you would at home. This sounds simple but it is the best way to stand up to all the temptations!
