Treat Trigger Finger

Trigger finger is a medical problem in which the sheath that surrounds the tendon that makes your fingers or thumb bend becomes swollen and restrictive. It can be very painful and often there is a catching that releases like the pop of a gun. In more severe cases the finger may remain locked in position. People who tend to grip things repetitively are more prone to the condition.

Immobilizing a finger can sometimes help trigger finger

If you are suspicious of a slight clicking in the motion of your finger or thumb (usually in your dominant hand and most frequently in the middle or ring finger or thumb), have it checked out. If caught early sometimes rest, immobilizing the finger and anti-inflammatory medications can mediate the symptoms.

The tendons slide through a sheath in the hand like the strings of a puppet.

If this is not enough, cortisone shots are very successful with a lot of people. If you are lucky, sometimes one shot is enough to solve the problem for good.

If none of these solutions work, surgery is the best choice. It is a relatively simple procedure in which the tight sheath that is 'strangling' the tendon that needs to slip through for motion is cut slightly. As it heals, it heals wider letting the tendon slide through the way it should. Although it is the most invasive treatment, in most cases it will get your hand back to working fluidly and painlessly.
