You can train your Cat to use the Toilet. It takes time and patience, but it can be done.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kitty Whiz Transfer system kit & your cat's present litter box
  1. Step 1

I trained my two cats at five months old. Purchase the Kitty Whiz transfer system. You can get it on Amazon.com or most Pet supply websites for about $17.00 plus Shipping. When it arrives it comes with easy instructions, cat attract herbs, which look like catnip, but is somewhat different and used to attract the cat to your toilet, and even includes a "Kitty whiz Transfer University" certificate.

  2. Step 2

Place the toilet shaped transfer system between the toilet bowl and seat (or you may place it directly onto the seat itself). Keep all plants away from the area so that Kitty does not have an alternate spot to go if he doesn't like the toilet. However, keep food and water nearby in the bathroom. Fill the "bowl area" of the transfer system with litter. Open the bag of herbs and let Kitty sniff it, then try to entice Kitty up to the toilet seat with it. If your cat is very young, you might want to place a step or box in front of the bowl to make it easy for them to jump up. I trained my two cats at five months old, so they were small and used the steps we made for about a week.

  3. Step 3

When the cat is drawn up to the toilet seat, sprinkle a small bit of the herbs onto the litter to further encourage the cat to the litter. Save the rest as you will need it as you add fresh litter during this training session. Do this in the evening, and leave Kitty in the bathroom with the door closed until morning. This will give the cat a significant amount of time to "need" to go potty. Try to give the cat privacy, as they don't appreciate an audience while doing their business. Keep an eye on the cat, to be sure they are relieving them self, as you want them to be "regular" to avoid medical problems. Clean the litter daily. When you begin to see Kitty going regularly, then begin to put less and less litter in the bowl. You can start to rinse it with water to keep it clean after Kitty goes. Then begin to cut out the pre-cut forms in the center of the Kitty Whiz system slowly as this becomes a regular habit with Kitty. This is done by cutting the center piece out first, then after a few successful days with kitty going without objection, cut the next ring, then the next until the ring bottom is gone, and kitty is actually going directly into the toilet. Once the bottom is out, you can remove the entire system and Kitty will go directly onto the toilet itself.

Tips & Warnings
  • This may take time and a lot of patience on your part, but is worth it. You will need to show the cat a lot of love and encouragement during this process, especially each time after the cat successfully relieves him or herself on the toilet, and try not to get frustrated if it takes a while. One of my Cats was easy and one had a hard time, so he took longer. Both were 5 month old brothers at the time. Like all family members, everyone learns at his or her own pace.
  • This may not work on older cats, especially if they are rescued, and therefore may have physical or emotional issues to begin deal with. Also, your cat MAY take two steps forward and one step back, OR, may fully learn to use the toilet and then, either because of a health or emotional issue, may just stop. You need to follow the steps all over again until the cat resumes using the toilet. Some cats do urinate into the toilet, but refuse to defecate. This may or may not be remedied in time, it is up to the cat. Be mindful if the cat flat out refuses to use the toilet, as it can cause health problems from "not going" to the animal.
