Save a Word Document to a Shared Folder

This article will explain how to save a Word document to a shared folder. Before attempting this, there must be a shared folder and networking set-up on the computer. While saving to Shared Folder is relatively simply, setting up the network and creating the needed permissions for sharing data and files between two or more computers requires moderate computer skills.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

The first step in preparing to save any Word document is to first write it. Obvious, but necessary. After the document is written; the computer needs to be told where to save the file.

  2. Step 2

Change the folder/directory where the file will be saved. This can be done by choosing "File" (Alt + F), then "Save As".

  3. Step 3

Next, change the destination folder. Once the user clicks on "Save As" (shown in the picture above) a second window opens which allows them to choose where the file is actually saved. The most common location for Shared Folders is under "My Network Places". Change the 'Save In' folder to where your Shared Folder is located. There are two different places to complete this task on the window that is open. Please see the locations on the picture. Click on the Shared Folder. You will now see its name in the 'Save In' folder up at the top of this screen.

  4. Step 4

Finally, name your file, chose the file type (it should already say Word document) and click the save button.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most important step is changing the destination folder of where the file is saved.
  • If you don't save the File in the Shared Folder on your Network you will not be able to access it from any other computer.
