Crochet a Starting Chain
Crochet a Starting Chain

If you're a beginner to crochet then chain stitches are where you want to start! It's the foundation to just about everything you make in crochet and often part of a design.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Before you can start anything you need to make a slip knot. A slip knot is a looped knot that can be adjusted to be smaller or larger. Create a loop with your yarn by crossing the end behind the working yarn (the yarn leading to the skein). Put your hook through that loop and pull the working yarn through. Tighten the knot onto the hook creating a loop on the hook!

  2. Step 2

To make a chain stitch, simple grab the working yarn with your crochet hook and pull throught the loop. You should now have a new loop on the hook and an oval shaped chain beneath the loop.

  3. Step 3

Continue in this manner pulling the working yarn through the loop on the hook to make the chain as long as you need.

  4. Step 4

To count how many chains you have, you count the oval shapes leading up to the hook but not the loop on the hook.
