Polar Fleece is warm and easy to care for.

Want to make a great gift that comes from the heart but does not require sewing, knitting, binding, or quilting? A polar fleece blanket is very soft, can be made by children or adults and is a gift that everyone will appreciate!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Pieces of polar fleece, the same exact size
  • Scissors
  • A flat surface
  1. Step 1

Purchase 2 pieces of polar fleece fabric exactly the same size but at least 54" square. 2 yards of fabric makes a good size throw blanket.

  2. Step 2

Lay your fabric panels on a flat surface such as the floor or a large table. Place the outsides (usually the softest side) or the design sides of the fabric facing right-sides out. If you are using printed fleece, you should be able to see the design on each side.

  3. Step 3

On each corner of the blanket, remove the corners by cutting a 5 inch square at each corner.

  4. Step 4

Cut through both pieces of fabric at one time to make a 5 inch long strip about an inch wide. Cut all the way around the blanket, cutting strips on all 4 sides side. With the blanket flat on the floor, it should look like it has "fringe" on all 4 sides.

  5. Step 5

Being careful not to shift the fabric or separate the cut fringe, tie each matching upper and lower strip in a knot. Do not tie so tight that the fabric bunches. Keep your knots a bit away from the fabric center, about 1/2 inch or so. Once you have tied all the fringe strips on all 4 sides, your blanket is done and ready to use or give as a gift.

Tips & Warnings
  • To make a fleece blanket that will cover the top of a twin bed, use a piece of fleece that is 54" wide by 7 feet long. Lay both pieces on top of each other and if the edges do not meet, trim them to match.
  • To wash the blanket, use cold water. To make the blanket all soft and fluffy, dry it in a clothes dryer on a low or medium heat setting.
  • Do not separate the fleece when you are tying the edges. It is real easy to skip a fringe strip if the fabric is not laying flat.
  • Polar fleece is flammable and should be washed in cold water and dried in a low or medium heat dryer.
