Surf casting is a sport in its own. This approach to fishing may be a more cost effective way to get to fish instead of boat or charter fishing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Long Fishing rod
  • Fishing line
  • Lures
  • Piece of beach to cast from
  1. Step 1

Choose a long spinning rod. As a general rule, the longer the rod the further you'll be able to cast. Be careful though and don't get a rod that's too much for you to handle because you will get too tired fighting a rod that is too big.

  2. Step 2

Choose your reel, the reel needs to be a spinning reel. This also needs to be comparable to the size of the rod that you have chosen. It should be able to hold a medium to heavy line. You can't go wrong with PENN Reels.

  3. Step 3

Your bait should really be chosen before your line so you know that the line can handle the weight. You can choose artificial lures or go the live bait route. On the live bait your sinker is going to determine how far you can cast. This will also depend on the wind and the tide.

Choose medium to heavy line, you want line that will be able to handle the weight of your bait. On the other hand if your line is too heavy you will not be able to tell whether a fish is biting your line. The line is going to directly depend on your choice of bait.

  5. Step 5

Hold the tip of the rod at about a 45 degree angle towards where you are trying to throw it. Then rotate the rod behind you holding it parallel to the ground and about shoulder height. When you are ready to cast take 2-3 steps toward the direction you are throwing and thrust the rod forward stopping at the 45 degree angle that you began from. During this transition release the line from under your finger in order for it to go forward. This release should occur about 1/2 through the motion.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a thin glove on your throwing hand so you can keep from skinning your fingers.
  • Do your research on the fish you intend to catch and learn their eating and swimming patterns.
  • Always be careful with hooks.

on 12/5/2008 This sounds like a fun way to fish. I never really heard of it before, but I don't live near the ocean. Thanks for the info!
