Get Your Handmade Business Started on Etsy.com

So you've thought of what you want to sell and you've signed up for your free store on Etsy.com, but now what? There's so much to do, where do you get started? What canyou do to make your business a success? Here are a few steps to get you going in the right direction!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You need a banner for your etsy store. There are plenty of free banner makers on the web, i suggest using bannersketch.com for making a banner online. You can also custom make your own banner if you have Photoshop or another graphic desinging program. Here is etsy's banner tutorial page for more info! http://www.etsy.com/storque/how-to/skill-share-making-a-banner-641/

  2. Step 2

You need product to sell, as long as you've made it by hand it can be sold on etsy.com. You should list at a minimu of 3-5 items, however more is always better. If your items are one of a kind then be sure to state that, but if you plan on selling more then one then be sure to have some on inventory.

  3. Step 3

Make business cards. You should be advertising your business to everyone you meet! You can make your very own business cards on your computer word or a free program form the internet, or you can even purchase business cards from the many online businesses like vistaprint.com and moo.com (a popular favorite of etsy users).

  4. Step 4

Advertise on social sites on the web. If you're an avid user of any social site like myspace, facebook, or a forum group like yahoo groups or cafemom, then be sure to advertise to your network there. Send out bulletins, messages, comments, (or whatever he case may be) to al lyour friends about your business. You want people to know about you.

  5. Step 5

Start a blog connected to your site. Buyers online don't have the pleasure of meeting you in person and people relly like to know the face pehind the work. Tell people about you and the process you go through when making your work. Feel free to ad personal side bars about what you do and your life, these people want to know you!

  6. Step 6

Sell more locally! Take part in craft shows or flea markets, or anything that pertains to your work. You can even sell your products at local consignment shops. Selling locally can be a gret advantage in getting your name out to the public, and you can always refer them back to your online store!

  7. Step 7

Join an etsy team. Etsy teams are a great way to help others advertise their business while they also help you! You can search different teams under the Community bar in the Menu at the top of the screen.

  8. Step 8

Use the features that etsy has to offer. Etsy has many great features like showcases, treasury, the teams, forums, alchemy, and so much more that can help you to get your name out there. Participate in the community and do different things to meet new people.
