Are you having a Christmas party for children this year? If you are looking for a fun party game, you can't go wrong with a piñata. Children of all ages (and some adults) have a blast trying to break open the piñata and see what treats are inside. This is an easy project to do yourself. Allow 4 days to complete the project, as drying is time consuming.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large round balloon or punching bag
  • Oatmeal canister
  • Newspapers (a few)
  • Large glass mixing bowl
  • Cookie sheet
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Tissue paper or paint
  • Aluminum foil.
  • Scissors
  • Rope or strong string
  • 4 days
  1. Step 1

Clear your work area and cover it with newspaper. Tear the rest of the newspaper into strips. They should be about 8-9 inches long and 1 inch wide.

  2. Step 2

Blow up your punching bag or balloon. Punching bags work well because they are the perfect size and shape for this project.

  3. Step 3

Mix your paste. You can do this in the glass mixing bowl. Mix one part flour to two parts water. It should be a thick consistency. Add more flour or water if necessary. Make sure the mixture is smooth and not lumpy.

  4. Step 4

Put your balloon or punching bag on the cookie sheet on your work area. If you put it directly on the work area without the cookie sheet, that newspaper can stick to it too. You can avoid this hassle by using the cookie sheet.

  5. Step 5

Dip a piece of newspaper into the paste, coating both sides. Use your fingers to squeegee some of the paste off. Place it at an angle on the balloon. Continue with the next strip, making sure to overlap. Keep doing this process until the entire balloon is covered, except for a hole at the top for filling.

  6. Step 6

Allow the balloon to dry for 24 hours. Repeat step 5, this time putting the strips in another direction. Allow another 24 hours for drying, then repeat step 5 again for the final time. Dry the third layer for 24 hours. Pop the balloon, and remove it.

  7. Step 7

Now, it's time to decorate your ornament piñata. Be creative. You can use tissue paper or paint. Make it look like a Christmas ornament.

  8. Step 8

Put three holes spaced evenly apart about 1 inch from the top where the opening is. Use these holes to attach your rope or string for hanging.

  9. Step 9

Make the top of the ornament using the oatmeal canister. Cut the canister to the appropriate size for your ornament so that it looks like the top of an ornament where you would attack the hook. Cut a hole in the canister for the rope or string to fit through. You can either cover the canister with foil, or paint it.

  10. Step 10

Fill the pinata with small wrapped candy canes, other wrapped candy, and small toys. Slide the decorated canister down the rope to the ornament. You are now ready to hang the piñata for your party!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you allow clearance for the swinging piñata and swinging bat for safety!
