  • a cleaner with oxalic acid
  • a pumice scouring pad for very deep rust

      Clean off the Rust!

      Put on rubber gloves to protect yourself against any chemicals in the cleaner.

      Use Oxalic Acid

      Use an oxalic acid cleaner, which is known to be one the best chemicals to beat rust. Make sure to follow the directions carefully as listed on the package. Any local hardware store can direct you to these products so that you can remove the rust.

      Get out deep rust stains

      For very deep rust stains, soak a pumice sponge in the oxalic acid cleaner and then scrub into the rust. This should remove even the deepest rust stains.

      To prevent rust from building up again, coat the product with a rust resistant primer. If you do not do that, at least try to cover the item or put it in a place where it will experience less weather and therefore will have less rust.
