Eat Healthy For Less Money On Groceries

The average family spends 6,300 bucks on groceries per year in America. With the current economy many people believe it is hard to eat healthy since healthy foods are usually very expensive, but that's not always true; you can actually get more and save more. I'll show you how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Objectiveness
  • Focus
  1. Step 1

First of all, as you have always been told, do not go grocery shopping when you are hungry. Grocery stores are always decorated or designed to make one realize the hunger that was not noticed before. Have you also noticed how you get trapped in grocery stores, especially Farmer's Markets? Hey they have to make their sales somehow.

  2. Step 2

Start from the produce aisle. Focus on spending your money first on your favorite fruits and vegetables, just remember you don't have to get as much as you always do. Don't be fooled by the "ugly" looking produce, they are mostly still very good, in fact the good ones actually probably have a lot of chemicals like pesticides to make them look good and by the way natural fruits are hardly good looking. It's about time we accept nature the way it is. Why am I saying all this? It is because the "ugly" fruits are always on sale!

  3. Step 3

Use leftover fruits or vegetables to make your soups, avoid the canned soups. Using leftovers help you save food so they don't get bad in the fridge or get thrown away, you actually get to make your soup just how you like it instead of some factory generic made stuff.

  4. Step 4

Bake your own cookies and other pastries. Have you noticed how cheap flour is? Stay away from the name brand ones, get the generic no name ones, trust me, if it tastes bad it will be that you did not follow the recipe right. Baking your own cookies, cakes and breads will actually help your ego as a cook, not only do you get to explore another side of yourself, you also get to monitor what really goes in your cookies and cakes not to mention the infinite amounts you get to make for friends and family and for very little or nothing at all.

  5. Step 5

Buy in bulk. Buying your snacks in small packs for the moment may seem to you like you are saving money but actually buying that same snack in a bigger pack and if possible in the store brand will save you tons of money. A lot of companies offer their products in bigger packs for actually almost the same price it costs for the smaller ones in "cute" packets. You could get three or four times the amount of food for the same or a few cents more. Do avoid buying some snacks just for boredom, if you can live without them don't get them, because you may find yourself eating just because you have them even when you are not hungry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use store coupons or discount cards. Make sure to look for what is on sale for the day to see if you want to buy the products on sale.
  • Switch red and yellow bell peppers for green ones, they sometimes cost less.
  • Switch whole wheat pasta or bread for white ones sometimes.
  • Don't get fooled by the "buy one, get one half off" deals if you were not planning on getting them. Some of those products are tricky because they will make you spend more money making you believe that you are getting a deal. You are not getting no deal that way.
