Step 1
On a snowy day or night it's going to happen. Your car will run out of gas or just break down and refuse to start. You'll be stuck maybe in the middle of nowhere.
What will you do then ? Well first you will need to avoid the temptation to walk for help unless you're sure shelter and a telephone are a short distance away , recommends the National Safety Council.
You will need to stay with your car, put the hood up and turn on your flashers. Then make use of your winter emergency kit, which should include the following items. -
Step 2
1) Two flares or reflective triangles to be put 5 and 120 paces behind your car. 2)A bag of cat litter or any course material to throw under your wheels for traction. 3)Store a small portable shovel 1 to 2 feet long for snow dig outs. 4) A windshield scraper and brush. 5) One or two working flashlights. 6) Two wool blankets for warmth. 7) Two large plastic trash bags. If you start to get cold, poke a hole in the bottem seam for your head and slip the bag over your body. 8)A Coffee can, candle and matches. You then will be able to melt snow for water and put the candle in the can to warm your hands and feet if your stuck for long periods of time. 9)It's a good idea to store some nonperishable foods. 10) Keep a can opener on hand for practical use in an emergency to open cans of food if you have them stored in your car.
