This is a fun little air boat that is easy to build. It took about two hours to build. It was built from an old remote control airplane. It has left and right stearing that is controled by throttle. Be creative and have fun.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 inch foam from a hardware store
  • An old remote controlled airplane
  • 1000 mha 3.6v lithium battery from a cell phone
  • Epoxy (to cover the body with)
  • Spray Paint
  1. Step 1
    Body shape
    Body shape

Start out with a flat piece of foam 4 inches wide by 6 inches long. Use 80 grit Sand paper to make it into the shape you. Try to make the rough shape like the picture.

  2. Step 2
    Bow shape

The shape of the bow is sanded into the foam also.

  3. Step 3
    Controls Already glued in.

Add a cutout into the top of the body. Make a little square that will hold the control electronics leaving the wires to the motors connected and the wires from the batteries exposed. You can epoxy the controls in now if you want. Just dont attach the battery yet.

  4. Step 4
    Motor Stand

Glue on the motors and motor stand. Keep using epoxy it won't melt the foam.

  5. Step 5
    Two tone paint

Coat the entire body in epoxy. It is important to work fast with the epoxy and to use less hardener than normal. Smooth it out nice, it will be very hard to sand if it looks bad. Paint your boat when all the body is covered with epoxy. Use a simple two-tone design like this one.

  6. Step 6
    Cell battery
    Cell battery

Solder the battery on and glue it to the top of the body. Use a dab of black silicone because you might want to remove it someday. I used an old cell phone battery.

  7. Step 7

Cut the charging pigtail off the airplane remote and put it on the old cell phone charger. The bonus is that you can plug the boat into the wall to charge instead into the controller which is the old arangement.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time making your boat.
  • Make sure battery and electronics are sealed from water with epoxy.
  • Do not use fiberglass resin it will melt foam.
