Get Motivated to Work Out

Finding motivation to work out is often the biggest setback in creating a lasting exercise habit. Excuses upon excuses can be rationalized by the unmotivated exerciser, but these excuses aren’t going to get anyone slimmer or more buff. If you want to enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of fitness, you need to make exercise training an important aspect of your lifestyle. Keep reading for ideas on how to find motivation to work out.

Things You'll Need:

  • the go-ahead from your doctor to start an exercise program
  1. Step 1

    **Learn some new moves.**

Buy or rent a trendy workout video. Sign up for that new exercise class at your gym or community center. Ease your usual walking program into a running routine. Learning new exercise moves can put the pep back into your fitness routine and give you newfound motivation to work out.

  2. Step 2

    **Exercise with a friend.**

We all want to be viewed as a dependable friend, and this also rings true for exercise buddies. If you know a friend is waiting somewhere for you, that is a great way of finding motivation to work out. Plus, your fitness benefits will increase if you and your exercise buddy like friendly competition.

  3. Step 3

    **Have workout videos handy.**

When the weather outside is frightening, sitting on sofa with your favorite munchies can be so inviting. Fight that urge to crash on the couch by popping in an exercise DVD. Make sure to have a few exercises DVDs on hand so you can’t use the “I’m bored of doing this workout video” excuse for not exercising.

  4. Step 4

    **Make a goal.**

Having a goal to strive for can help with exercise motivation. If that doesn't cut muster with you, add a reward for making the goal. Having something to look forward to is often a great tool for finding motivation to workout.

  5. Step 5

    **Make your fitness program doable.**

This is the most important step in how to find motivation to work out. Your exercise routine needs to be a life-long habit if you are to reap the most fitness benefits. Sure, a little change to your everyday routine is to be expected, but do not place unreasonable demands on yourself. Exercise training should not be a chore. If you prefer training in the afternoon, then by all means don’t force yourself to become an early-bird exerciser. If you loathe yoga, don’t feel like you have to do it because it’s the “in” thing. Making your fitness routine manageable is the key to becoming a successful exerciser. Enough talk—it’s time to get motivated to work out!
