Do Knockdown Texture in Your Home

Why pay a contractor or specialist? This article will help you do knockdown texture in your home. This will bring your old uneven walls to life. This will also save
you hundreds of dollars.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Compressor with long hose
  • Knockdown gun & hopper
  • Texture mix
  • 5 gallon empty bucket
  • Drill with mixer bit(optional)
  • Straight edge trowel
  1. Step 1
    Compressor and hose

    Compressor and hose

The first step is prep work. You want to cover your floors with a tarp or any other plastic. The process is slightly messy. I would advise to remove all furniture from the room. Set up your compressor in a corner and lay your hose out. The bigger the compressor, the easier the job will go. If you have a small compressor, you will have to wait around alot because it needs to fill. You will need constant air flow.

  2. Step 2
    Hopper and spray gun

You can now attach your gun to the hopper and adjust which setting you will prefer. There is a dial on the gun that can be set for small or large texture. You will next need a bag of mix. I buy mine at Home Depot. Its a white powder in a green bag. You will find in the paint section. Empty 1/3 of the bag into your five gallon bucket. You want to add water slowly until you have a consistent mix. You do not want it too thick or too soupy.

  3. Step 3

You can now insert your mix into the hopper. Attach the hopper to your air gun. You can begin to spray your walls. I would start with one wall at a time. If the texture is coming out too quick, adjust the pressure on your compressor. Most have a knob for your pressure. After a wall is complete. Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes.

  4. Step 4
    Trowel

    Trowel

The final step is the knockdown phase. You will take your straight edge trowel and glide it over the section you just sprayed. You want to apply a slight amount of pressure. Don't add too much of you will not get the correct finish. I have learned that the longer you let it sit, the better it comes out. You want to use a straight edge trowel. The one pictured is a little different. I just wanted to give you an idea of what it looks like. The overall process will take time to master but will save you a ton of money. I would recommend letting the walls cure for 24 hours and then you can paint. I love the look and have done it in all my houses. If you have questions, please feel free to email me.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a big compressor for good air flow
  • I purchased my hopper, gun, and mix at Home Depot (Same price as Lowes)
  • Cover your floors and remove furniture (Slightly Messy)
