The ancient Egyptians wore long, loose, linen garments that were well suited to the hot climate. This means creating an ancient Egyptian costume is a simple process, with no sewing required. Also, no expensive or obscure materials are required, making this a great costume idea if you're working to a budget. This ancient Egyptian costume is suitable for a range of events such as costume parties, Halloween parties and school plays, and children will enjoy helping to decorate the costume accessories.
- Measuring tape
- White material
- Colored material
- Card stock
- Felt-tip pens
- Gold paint
Measure the height of the person who will be wearing the costume from the neck to the floor. Double this length and write it down. Measure the width of the person from elbow to elbow. Cut the white material -- a bed sheet is ideal -- to the required width and height.
Fold the material in half so you have a front and back. Cut a neck hole in the middle of the fold. Make a small slit down the back of the costume, from the center of the neck hole, to make the costume easier to slip over the head.
Cut a thick strip of colored material to use as a belt and secure the costume in place. White clothes will need to be worn underneath the costume.
Headband and Collar
Measure the circumference of the head and cut the card stock to the correct length. The width should be approximately 2-3 inches, depending on how thick you want the finished headband. Place a hole in each end to thread the string through to secure the headband in place.
Draw a pattern on the headband and color it in with brightly colored pens. Tie the string to one end of the headband and thread four or five beads onto it. Knot the string, add a few more beads, and continue with this process until you near the end of the string. Tie it to the other end of the headband.
Measure the width of the shoulders. Using this measurement for the diameter, draw a circle on card stock and cut it out. Cut a straight line from the edge to the center of the circle, and cut out a head-size hole.
Decorate the collar to match the headband, and secure it at the back with beaded string, using the same process as the collar.
Measure from the wrist to halfway up the forearm, and measure the circumference of the arm.
Mark the arm measurements onto a piece of card stock, adding 1-2 inches to the width measurement so the finished bracelet is big enough to slip on and off over the hand. Cut the card out and glue the two long edges together.
Decorate with gold paint, gold spray paint or gold pens.
