Paint a Cake

With cooking shows such as Ace of Cakes, we have seen just how versitile cakes really can be. But do you really have to pay that much money for a beautiful cake? Not one bit. I'll show you how you can paint your own cakes and turn a regular cake into something extraordinary!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 2-layer prepared cake
  • 1 container prepared vanilla frosting
  • Rolled out Fondant(enough to fit your cake)
  • Jars of food coloring
  • Toothpicks or skewers
  • Pastry bag fitted with a small round tip
  • Paintbrushes of various sizes
  • Cookie cutters, templates, or stencils
  1. Step 1

Apply a thin layer of frosting over the entire cake to keep losse crumbs from adhering to the spatula when frosting the cake. Let this dry for 20 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the Fondant Icing as the package directs and roll it out enough so that it covers the entire cake. I recommend painting a fondant covered cake as opposed to just frosting because the designs look much more flawless. Carefully cover the cake, making certain to smooth out the fondant so that there are no bubbles. Cut away any left over fondant.

  3. Step 3

Make a drawing of your design on paper first, to make certain you know what you want. Very lightly, outline the drawing on the cake's surface with a toothpick or a wooden skewer. A simpler way to do this is with a cookie cutter. Simply press very lightly onto the cake's surface; just enough to leave a slight impression.

  4. Step 4

Dip a paintbrush into the food coloring and apply the color over the fondant carefully, making certain to test the color on a spare patch of fondant before you paint the cake itself. Wipe off some of the color if you need to go with a lighter color, as the hue will be quite dark straight from the bottle.

  5. Step 5

If needed, fill a pastry bag with tinted frosting and fit with a fine tip. Pipe outlines around your painted designs to make them stand out more. Now be prepared for your party-goers to swear that you bought it!
