Don't be scared, it's just pork.
Don't be scared, it's just pork.

Hearing a lot about SPAM, but have been afraid to try it? This guide will show how to get SPAM from the store and into your stomach.
Despite what some people say, SPAM is not a mystery meat. SPAM is pork and ham in a can. It's a tasty and useful option to add some protein to a recipe. I've seen it made in the factory, and I've been to the SPAM museum (Yes, there is a museum for SPAM!) It's fun, filing, and nutritious. Here's what to do...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to any grocery store and find the canned meat section. The SPAM luncheon meat is usually near the canned tuna or chili.

  2. Step 2
    SPAM Singles = $1.00

Since this is your first taste of SPAM, buy SPAM Classic. If you don't want to buy the full 12 oz can, look for a smaller size. You can find a 7 oz can and the new SPAM Singles (3.5 oz).

To get the SPAM out of the can, pull the tab on the lid and peel it open.

  4. Step 4

Hold the can on the thin sides and squeeze it until the long sides of the can "pop" out. This gives the meat some wiggle room to come out.

  5. Step 5

Tap the rim of the can on the counter and the SPAM will slide right out.

  6. Step 6

Slice the meat lengthwise about a quarter inch thick.

  7. Step 7

Fry the SPAM in a skillet until golden brown on both sides. No oil or butter needed.

  8. Step 8

Eat the SPAM meat next to eggs, put it on bread, or add it to rice.

  9. Step 9
    Hawaii's SPAM Musubi

Try some of the thousands of SPAM recipes from all over the world. For example, try Hawaiian SPAM Musubi, British SPAM Fritters, Japanese SPAM Fried Rice, or American SPAM Burgers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Since it is fully cooked, you can eat the SPAM straight out of the can, but most prefer to fry it first.
  • SPAM is pork/ham that has been blended and cooked. Same as hot dogs and chicken nuggets.
  • Once you try SPAM Classic, try some of the other varieties: SPAM Lite, SPAM Less Sodium, Hickory Smoke, Hot and Spicy, etc.
  • Only buy Hormel SPAM. The last thing you want is imitation processed lunch meat
  • When you first open the can there will be some jelly residue. Don't be afraid, it's perfectly edible. You can also wipe it off with a knife.
  • After you eat it and realize it's really not bad, your friends might make fun of you when they find extra cans in your kitchen.

on 12/13/2008 I hated Spam until I actually tried it. You're right, it's just spiced ham. My favorite is to eat it Hawaiian style (with terryaki sauce and pineapple).
