Things You'll Need:
- You will need a tape measure and the knowledge of existing pieces of furniture in your room.
-
Step 1
The first step in choosing a sofa is to determine the scale or size of the sofa you will need to best fit your room. You will need to measure any existing pieces of furniture in your room. A three seat sofa normally measures 86" wide x 36" deep x 37" high.
-
Step 2
The second step in choosing a sofa is acknowledging the existing furniture in the room. Along with taking note of the existing furniture; one will also have to be aware of any color or pattern in the room. Being aware of existing fabrics or patterns will help with the process of choosing a fabric for the sofa. Most sofas are upholstered in a neutral fabric. This allows for patterns to be introduced with pillows and window treatments.
-
Step 3
The last step in choosing a sofa is placing it in the room. Make sure the furniture floor plan makes sense for the room' s layout. Spatial knowledge of the room will assist with any placement decisions of the sofa. Make sure to allow for able room for the sofa. A sofa is usually flanked with one or two end tables. These end tables allow for table lamps, which create general ambience for the room.

on 2/19/2009 Thanks for the tips. I learned that having a tape measure with you when choosing sofas is really useful, too. Make sure you know how high your stud (or ceiling)is and how wide and high your doorways are - this way you will know if you can get it into your home/lounge! Remember - BIGGER couches arent always the BEST couches!
