Christmas Letters Can Be Fun!
Christmas Letters Can Be Fun!

Ahhh, Christmas Letters. They come from near and far accompanied by Christmas cards from close family and friends. More often than not, the yearly Christmas letter is about as exciting to read as the dictionary. But, it doesn't have to be! Here are some tips on how to write a super fun Christmas letter that your family and friends will actually enjoy reading.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Creativity
  • A little time
  • Sense of humor
  1. Step 1
    The Christmas Letter Quiz
    The Christmas Letter Quiz

The Quiz. Think about things that each family member has done this year. Write them out in quiz form, for instance, "This year, Clint: a. Graduated from college, b. Snagged a job as a tax accountant, c. Proposed to Lindsay, or d. All of the above." Circle the correct answer to show which answers apply. This is a quick and fun way to let family in on all that has happened the past year.

  2. Step 2
Write Your Christmas Letter from Baby's POV

Point of View. Write from a point of view other than yours. You can write about the year from the baby's point of view, the dog's point of view, or even your house's point of view. This makes a really entertaining Christmas Letter.

  3. Step 3

Family Brochure. This may take some computer knowledge on your part, but in your word document or other card creating program, set up a brochure template. Paste a family picture on the front with an intriguing heading that has something to do with a big event this year, for instance, "The Maddox Family Moved On Up!" if your family moved into a new home. Inside the brochure, dedicate a quick blurb or two to each family member with an accompanying picture!

  4. Step 4
    Create a Christmas Letter Story

Create a Story. If you are a master of words, consider creating a Christmas tale about your adventures of the year. Beware, once you start writing a creative story like this, you'll have a hard time stopping!

  5. Step 5
'Twas the Night Before the Postal Deadline Christmas Letter
'Twas the Night Before the Postal Deadline Christmas Letter

The Night Before Christmas Re-Do. Everyone knows the familiar rhyme of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Why not write your Christmas Letter in the form of the Night Before Christmas? For instance, "'Twas the night before the Postal deadline and all through my house, Kids were running and yelling, 'Gimme that back, it's MY toy mouse!' I sat and I pondered what to write you this year, But my brain wouldn't work, my mind wasn't clear..."

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't blab. It gets long-winded and boring!
  • Don't brag... too much. A few pertinent comments about someone graduating or winning a contest is fine, but don't brag about all of the great purchases you made that year.
  • Always include pictures, people want to see you too!
