Use White Noise to block distractions or to just relax...

If you’ve ever visited or worked in a large office building, you’ve probably experienced the subtle but audible broadcast of white noise. This background hiss or swoosh sound is often attributed to air conditioning or computer fans, etc. White noise is broadcasted in many public buildings in order to block distractions and enhance privacy (i.e., in cube farms). In more recent times, many people have purchased white noise machines and installed in their homes to aid in sleeping, soothe migraines, or even to mask Tinnitus (ringing of the ears). Many parents find that white noise helps their infants and toddlers sleep. This article provides a link to an online site that will generate customizable white noise right at your PC. The site is absolutely free, and the quality is really very good.

Note that the site designers have given us a couple of variations, including pink noise (a bit louder and sharper), and brown/red noise (a bit deeper, almost like a nearby ocean or running water current). Experiment with the various options on this page to find the flavor (and level) of noise you prefer.

If you’d prefer to play a local audio file (MP3) so that you can enjoy white noise while offline, or perhaps an audio CD that you can listen to in your car or at home, see the Resources section below for links.
