Step 1
Many baby rooms start with a theme. Perhaps it is teddy bears, boats, princess, cars, a certain cartoon character, a sport, and the list goes on. If you would like a sophisticated nursery, it is best to NOT use a theme. Often times if you have a few theme items, your baby will get an endless amount of gifts in that theme making the room look like a gift shop.
-
Step 2
The first thing to decide when decorating a nursery is the color scheme. Some popular sophisticated color schemes are currently chocolate & light blue, chocolate & pink, sage green & pink, black & yellow, navy & green, red & pink, or lime green & chocolate.
-
Step 3
When selecting bedding, bypass your local baby store. For a more sophisticated look, check online at baby boutiques, or you can purchase adult bedding and have it tailored to fit a crib sized mattress. Consider using multiple coordinating patterns for interest.
-
Step 4
Babies have lots of functional furniture that is not always attractive. Consider putting the changing table in a closet. You can even replace the closet door with a drape for easier access and more decorative appeal. Instead of the traditional baby glider, shop for a vintage or antique rocking chair. There are also lounge chairs available today that offer a rocking feature however the rocking mechanism is hidden.
-
Step 5
Store kid clutter out of sight. Consider using an open bookshelf with baskets for toy storage. All other items should be put away.
-
Step 6
Finish decorating the room as you would any other room in the house. Select coordinating rugs, paint the walls to match with the bedding, use elegant light fixtures (maybe a chandelier), artwork, and other sophisticated furniture.
-
Step 7
Try to select green eco-friendly products whenever possible. Consider an organic mattress and linens, organic carpet, and no VOC (volatile organic compound) paints.
