Step 1
SWITCH TO LED LIGHTS: LED Christmas lights are now widely available in most stores. They initially will cost a bit more than the traditional ones, but will pay off in the long run. The lights will both last longer and you can expect to save up to 90% of the energy used for traditional lights.
-
Step 2
SWITCH TO SOLAR LIGHTS OUTSIDE WHERE YOU CAN: Although they are not as widely available as others, using solar lights to decorate outdoors is a huge energy savings and can be enjoyed for many years to come. As an additional benefit, you won't have to cover up or hide as many electric cords outside.
-
Step 3
USE A TIMER: By putting your lights on a timer, you won't have to worry about forgetting to turn them off at night and can ensure that they are only turned on after dark, thus saving a lot of energy.
-
Step 4
ENJOY TREE OR CANDLE LIGHT: If you aren't in the need for a large amount of light, for tasks such as reading, think of enjoying the evening by candle or Christmas tree light. The festive lighting may even make you slow down and enjoy the holidays and your family more.
-
Step 5
TURN DOWN THE HEAT DURING GET TOGETHERS: When you expect to have a house full of people, think of turning down the heat. The additional people usually add heat to the house without any energy being used.

on 12/4/2008 Some great ideas! We actually turn the heat up when guests are coming over, since we keep the house pretty cold otherwise - LOL.
