Step 1
You do NOT need to display every scrap of paper that your children bring home from school. Consider getting one large manila folder per child per year. All saved artwork that is not on display must fit in that folder, else some should be discarded so that the best will fit (let the children select their favorites). For larger pieces or 3 dimensional pieces, take a photo of your child holding that piece of art and put the photo in the folder.
-
Step 2
Do NOT hang artwork from magnets on the fridge. Your fridge should have nothing on it in order to make your kitchen less cluttery.
-
Step 3
Buy a collection of frames that look good in your home for your children's art. Make sure they have white mattes for a more professional look. For even more sophistication, select artwork that coordinates with the decor of the room. You can rotate the artwork to display different pieces at different times. If you have larger artwork (11" x 17" or larger), you can display it by itself without a collection in a frame with a matte.
-
Step 4
Have your children paint contemporary artwork to hang on the walls. Purchase several identical canvases from an art supply store and 5 or less colors that coordinate with your room. Do not select primary colors, else the artwork may look juvenile. Have the kids paint their own contemporary masterpieces, adding their signature and date at the bottom. Make sure they cover all of the white canvas, including the sides, so that no white shows through. Hang all the canvases together as a collection. Use at least 2 large sized (36" x 36" or larger) or 3 medium sized (18" x 18") canvases. Smaller canvases are not suggested.
-
Step 5
For the kids' rooms, consider getting a decorative wall mounted curtain rod and some clip curtain rings. Hang the rings on the curtain rod and clip the artwork to the rings. This method works better than using a clothesline because it does not sag in the middle and it looks more sophisticated. You can hang the curtain rods at kid level so that they can rotate their favorite pieces in and out, or you can hang it towards the ceiling so younger siblings can not touch.
-
Step 6
Put the artwork on a large bulletin board. Make sure the artwork does not overlap the frame or hang outside the bulletin board, else it will look messy.
-
Step 7
Make a scrapbook or photo book with the artwork contained inside and put the book on display. Make sure the artwork is not hanging outside the pages.
-
Step 8
Buy nice glass photo coasters (not the cheap plastic ones). Fill the coasters with the actual artwork or a photo of the artwork.

on 12/17/2008 These are great ideas. I also like what The Picasso Kid does--creating a personalized book with your children's artwork. Then the art is preserved forever and can easily be shared and looked at...no more big boxes, frames, or wall space needed.
