1. Check your compatibility. Not all graphic cards are compatible with every computer or operating system. Read the requirements to be sure it will run smoothly with your PC, Mac or laptop. You'll also want to find out if it's compatible with the software you use most often.

2. Decide your usage. What will you be using your computer for? For high-end gaming or the latest graphic enhanced software, you will want a graphic card that can keep up with your performance. If in doubt ask at a software or computer shop just how powerful a graphic card you require.

3. Read graphic card reviews. Consumers are an invaluable source of information on computer hardware or software. Check with tech or computer oriented websites to be sure you're getting a worthwhile graphic card.

4. Shop around. When you decide on a graphic card, check at least three sources or vendors that sell that particular card. At least one shop is sure to have a sale. Be sure to check online and brick and mortar computer stores.

5. Be wary of cards that will be obsolete. Getting a good deal on a graphics card or any computer software is important, but don't sacrifice quality and long-term compatibility. If you're looking at a graphic card that just meets the requirements for your computer usage, consider getting a slightly updated model. There's no sense in paying for a new graphic card when it has the possibility of becoming obsolete in 6 months to a year.
