Blend Makeup to Change a Face

Women have used makeup for years to make their faces look smoother and brighter or to decorate their skin. But makeup can be used to subtly accent or diminish, that is, actually CHANGE the look of facial features. Here are some tips on how to use make-up artistically.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Accent cheekbones

Color and shading create optical illusions. Darker colors appear to recede while lighter ones move forward. You can use this concept to 'shade' your features with makeup. For example you can bring out cheekbones by blushing a slightly darker color just beneath the bone to hollow out the area. A lighter color over the top of the cheek bone will accent it more by bringing it forward.

  2. Step 2
Shading brings the eyes closer together; lightening sets them apart.

Use a lighter color at the start of the nose toward the inside of the eye to make the space between eyes appear wider. A darker color will bring eyes closer together. The reason for eye shadow is it makes the eyes look larger by deepening the space above the eyes.

  3. Step 3
Narrow the bridge of a broad nose.

A rounder face can look less wide by dusting a slightly darker color on the sides of the face. A weak chin can be brought forward with a lighter flesh tone. A broad nose can be narrowed with slightly darker shadows on either side. The trick to making all this work is by using only slightly different shades of color, making sure they are all close to your own skin tone, and blending them very subtly so they are not noticeable.

  4. Step 4
Fill lips with a lighter color to 'plump'.

Light and dark concepts work on lips. Lip-lining with a darker color makes lips look fuller. If you have a thinner upper or lower lip, try using a slightly lighter color on the thinner lip to make it appear a bit larger.

  5. Step 5

Using light and dark with your makeup, you can go beyond just covering skin with color. You can actually sculpt your face by adding shadows and highlights. You can shade out features you want to minimize and brighten forward your assets. If you bother to wear makeup, you might just as well make the most of it!
