Repair Wooden Window Rot

How to repair rotten wood windows and restor to a beautiful finish.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wood putty
  • Putty knife
  • drill motor w/1/8"bit
  • 5in1 paint tool
  • Sandpaper
  • Matched Paint/primer
  • paint tools
  • caulking
  1. Step 1

First we want to scrape any old loose paint and actually dig out any rotten wood all the way to nothing if thats what it takes.

  2. Step 2

Then we want to mix our wood putty, I actually use auto body filler but this has to be applied very quick and is a litlle harder to sand smooth.

  3. Step 3

Drill holes inside reair area deep enough not to go through walls but to help hold putty.

  4. Step 4

Fill holes and bad spot with putty. Work in untill there are no voids and apply as close to original shape as possible. Do not worry about any lines or small splotches, we will sand those out.

  5. Step 5

Let dry for recommended time on package and sand to a smooth finish that follows original shape of window. If you miss a spot or leave pits simply reapply and re-sand.

  6. Step 6

Now caulk, prime, and paint and you are done. Stand back and admire your work because you probably have other windows that need it also. Ain't it purty!!!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have more than one spot or window do 1 spot first to get the feel, you will get better as you go along...
  • If major chunks are bad you may have to replace trim, bullnose,or window.
