How to Write Valentine's Day Verses

Love poetry is an ideal addition to any Valentine's Day gift or a touching romantic present in its own right. Writing Valentine's Day verses is not technically difficult, but may challenge you to honestly share your feelings. Love poems do not have to rhyme, but some understanding of rhythm and meter may make for better verses. While jewelry, flowers or candy may be traditional, a poem is a gift that will be treasured for a lifetime. You can also write love poetry for any occasion or just for the fun of it. Regardless of when you share your feelings in verse, your partner is sure to appreciate it.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the format or style for your Valentine's Day verses. Free verse may be the easiest option if you do not regularly write poetry; however, sonnets are another good choice for a love poem. Even a short poem, like a cinquain or haiku, can share your feelings with your partner (see Resources below).

Think about your feelings and begin putting them to paper. You may want to simply write stream of consciousness prose at this point, make notes or even create a graphic organizer. Include specific moments in your relationship that had an emotional significance for you.

    • 3

Read through your notes, prose or thoughts. You may find that you already have the basis for good Valentine's Day verses. Choose active statements, use feeling words, and opt for language that describes sensory experiences.

    • 4

Choose a metaphor that describes your feelings, relationship or what you would like to express or share with your partner. Use the notes you have made to integrate that metaphor into a Valentine's Day love poem for the special person in your life. Rework the language to rhyme or fit the poem style you have chosen.

    • 5

Read your poem out loud. Make any additional changes or corrections to your verses. Double-check your spelling and grammar, allowing some poetic leeway if needed.

    • 6

Present your poem. Perhaps you want to recite it to your girlfriend or give your husband a framed copy. Make sure you offer them a written version even if you recite it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider a visit to the stationary store for lovely paper or vellum to print your poem. You may want to save love poems to share at your wedding or include with your vows.

  • Avoid sharing love poems with friends unless you have your partner's permission.
