How to Braid a Ribbon Lei
You don't have to hightail it to Hawaii to get yourself a lei. You can make your own with a couple of ribbons and a mere few minutes when you braid a ribbon lei. Ribbon leis are not only fashionable, but they are durable, stylish and can be created in whatever colors you choose, to match any wardrobe.

1
Pick your ribbon. Select two ribbons that are about 1 to 2 inches wide and at least double the length you want your finished lei to be. Choose two of the same color or two contrasting shades, depending on the look you want.
-
2
Sew one end together. Place the ends of your ribbon perpendicular and stitch the two squares into place.

3
Braid. Begin braiding by folding one of the ribbons over the square base and topping with the other ribbon. Keep folding and placing portions on top of one another until the full length is used.
-
4
Stitch the other end. Secure the finished product by stitching the ribbon ends together at the finished end and then stitching the two finished ends together to form a necklace.
-
5
Decorate as desired. Leave your ribbon lei au natural or spruce it up by pinning or stitching plastic flowers, longer ribbons, tassels or other embellishments throughout.

Tips & Warnings
Ribbons of heavier, stiffer materials are easiest to braid with precision. Don't limit yourself to ribbon. This same technique can be used to braid leis out of palm fronds, material scraps or even heavy paper.
Only put your lei on your dog if you know he won't chew it to pieces.
