Getting a FCC Aircraft Radio License

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) consists of a board appointed by the president of the United States. The FCC regulates interstate and international communication by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. As with any government agency, the FCC requires forms and fees to apply for a license.

• FCC Form 605
• Call signs (if you have a developmental license)
• FCC registration number
• FAA registration number of the aircraft

1. Read the FCC regulations for aircraft and amateur licenses. Before you apply for anything, make sure you know the responsibilities and penalties that accompany the license.

2. Obtain an FCC registration number. This is a 10-digit number used to identify everyone applying with the FCC. If you have applied in the past, you already have a number. If not, follow the link below to obtain a new number.

3. Fill out FCC Form 605, which is used for aircraft and amateur licenses. The form can be filled out online (see link below). The same form is used for new licenses or modifications. You will need the FAA registration number for your aircraft.

4. File for a developmental license, if needed. Aircraft radio operators may apply for a developmental license for 180, if needed. If you have a developmental license, you can apply for an actual license with the same call signs by choosing Renewal Only and stating your call sign in Item 5 of Form 605.

5. Submit the form and pay the fee. This can all be done online at the FCC. If you send the form and fee through regular mail, ensure that everything is sent as one package.
