Things You'll Need:
- Motorcycle engine oil
- Harley Davidson oil filter
- Replacement oil drain gasket
- Drain pan
- Socket wrench
- Ratchet
- Strap wrench
- Owner's manual
-
Step 1
Ride the Harley for 10 to 15 minutes just prior to changing the oil to warm and loosen the oil a bit.
-
Step 2
Park the Harley on its kickstand, open the engine case and find the oil tank cap. Remove the cap and set it aside.
-
Step 3
Position a pan underneath the oil drain screw, located underneath the frame and engine block. Remove the screw with your fingers and allow all of the oil to drain out into the pan. If the plug is on too tight, use a socket wrench to get it started.
-
Step 4
Replace the rubber gasket on the oil drain screw while you're waiting for the oil to drain completely, then replace the screw.
-
Step 5
Lift the latch at the front of the seat to lift the seat off of the motorcycle, revealing the oil filter compartment. Open this compartment to expose the oil filter cylinder.
-
Step 6
Unscrew and remove the cylinder. If necessary, use a ratchet and strap wrench attachment to loosen it until it can be unscrewed the rest of the way by hand.
-
Step 7
Pull the soiled filter out of the cylinder and replace it with a clean one. Then screw the cylinder back into its compartment until it's tight by hand and close the lid. Shut the seat hatch and lock it securely in place.
-
Step 8
Add motorcycle engine oil through the oil tank intake. The engines vary among Electra Glide motorcycles and refill quantities vary with them, so you will need to consult your owner's manual to determine the right amount for your engine. Replace the oil tank cap.
-
Step 9
Replace the oil tank cap.
