When you update your home by purchasing new appliances, it can be difficult to figure out what to do with your used older appliances. Why not donate them to a charitable organization? Most charities conveniently arrange for a free pickup of your appliance. Not only will you be helping the environment by preventing your appliance from going to the landfill, but you will also feel great knowing that your appliance is supporting a good cause.

Instructions

1. Donate appliances to the Salvation Army. Call them at 1-800-95-TRUCK to schedule a pickup for the thrift store nearest you. The charity will sell your appliance at the store and use the money to help fund numerous adult community programs.

2. Donate appliances to Goodwill Industries. Like The Salvation Army, Goodwill picks up your appliance and takes it to the nearest thrift store. The proceeds support Goodwill's employment and training programs, which help people become successful in their jobs and careers.

3. Donate appliances to Habitat for Humanity. Renowned for building houses all over the world, this charity has a network of thrift stores throughout the nation called Habitat for Humanity Restores. Earnings from these stores go toward the supplies and equipment needed to build houses. Contact the Restore near you to arrange for a pickup of your appliance.

4. Donate appliances to St. Vincent de Paul. A worldwide Catholic charity, SVDP offers humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and programs for the poor and homeless. It raises funds for these programs through its nationwide network of thrift stores. Contact the store nearest you to arrange for a pickup of your appliance.

5. Donate appliances to the American Council of the Blind. The ACB is the nation's leading organization in helping the blind and visually impaired. Tips & Warnings

• Check with your accountant to see if you can receive any tax benefits from your donation.

• Most charities will accept small appliances such as toasters or electric mixers. Call ahead and check if they will accept larger appliances such as ovens, washing machines or refrigerators.
