How to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Houses are more air-tight than ever, which is good for your heating and cooling bills, but not so great for indoor air quality. Without fresh air coming in from the outside, odors and allergens can build up in the recirculated air, causing irritation and illness.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Dust and vacuum thoroughly. And often. Removing dust (which is composed mostly of skin flakes and/or pet dander, yuck!), mold spores, and allergens swiftly is a good way to keep them out of the air.

  2. Step 2

Use eco-friendly cleaning products. Harsh chemicals can off-gas into the air, causing lung irritation in some people. You can even make your own cleaners using common household items- check the resources section for links.

  3. Step 3

Run a humidifier, at least in the bedrooms. The dry air found in many homes (especially in the winter, with the heater running) can dry out skin and mucus membranes, leading to illness.

  4. Step 4

Don't smoke. Medical advice dictates that you quit altogether. But, if you can't, at least step outside. Chemicals in cigarette smoke can linger for weeks, stinking up the house and causing irritation to lungs and nasal passages.

  5. Step 5

Create an indoor jungle. Plants are great air fresheners. Pothos, spider plants, and rubber plants are all especially good at clearing the air of toxins and creating usable oxygen! They also give off moisture through their leaves.

  6. Step 6

Every once in awhile- once a week or so- open all the windows and doors and let some fresh air in. You don't have to leave them open all day- even 10 minutes with a good cross-breeze will whisk away much of your indoor pollution and leave your home smelling fresh.

Tips & Warnings
  • Beware of "air cleaners" or "ionizers." They're expensive and cumbersome... and independent testers have determined repeatedly that they don't live up to their claims.
