Step 1
Get your used outboard motor from AFA Marine, Inc. The site's inventory includes all brands in 2- and 4-stroke. Contact them at admin@smalloutboards.com if you have any questions. They buy and trade new and used outboard motors.
-
Step 2
Take advantage of UsedOutboardMotors.com. This is a resource page with links for used outboard motors for the most popular brands. You'll also find a vendor for vintage outboard motors.
-
Step 3
Consider a 2-stroke motor if you are not too concerned about the ride. This type of motor accelerates quickly and is perfect if you enjoy a rough ride over the water. It is also less expensive than a 4-stroke motor. Look for a 4-stroke motor if you want a smooth ride. Although they are more expensive, they generally meet EPA requirements.
-
Step 4
Expect to pay about $4,500 for a 2-stroke outboard motor and upwards of $8,000 for a 4-stroke, depending on the brand. Check your local newspapers; some people like to upgrade their boats regularly. Many consumers often find good deals on eBay or Craigslist.
-
Step 5
Determine the shaft size before purchasing an outboard motor. Motors are available with short, long and extra long shafts. Additionally, the shaft size determines the number of passengers on the boat. Check the manufacturer's manual before selecting a motor.
