Lose Weight and Save Money on Food

Soda, chips, cheese dip, frozen pizza and candy bars are all cheap. They are also high in fat, calories, sugar and carbs. You want to lose weight--not money. Healthy foods seem more expensive. It costs more to buy fresh fruits and organic vegetables. A couple cups of strawberries costs more than a gallon of strawberry ice cream. Where is the justification for eating more healthy? There is a way to lose weight and save money. Once you make the changes permanent, you will have some money left over for a slimmer outfit.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eat less. One of the reasons people have trouble losing weight, is because portions are too big. People have been taught to clean their plates--to eat everything. Don't. If you are eating out, only eat half of what you are given. You will save money because your meal will last for two meals. And you won't be gaining weight from the extra calories. If you are eating in, leave some leftovers.

  2. Step 2

Eat at home. Let's face it. Even if you order healthy food at a restaurant, it is doused in butter and oil. It tastes good, because (no matter what the menu says) it's not good for you. Avoid fast food and restaurants.

  3. Step 3

Eat fresh. Consume fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and fish.

  4. Step 4

Buy canned goods. It's not good to eat from a can when you can get it fresh. But there are some smart choices. There are fat-free re-fried beans, fat-free black beans and crushed tomatoes. Buy wholesale if possible.

  5. Step 5

Drink water--lots of water. It will help to keep you full. If you feel hungry, try drinking a glass of water. Make sure that it is free tap water.

  6. Step 6

Bake your own bread. Believe it or not, bread is made with sugar. If you bake your own bread, you can use Splenda instead of sugar.

  7. Step 7

Make a budget and ration your food. Only buy what you can afford. Try making a large meal, and then dividing it up and eating a little of it each day. It will last longer and save you money.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to buy generic foods and keep a grocery list.
  • Don't sacrifice the vitamins you need to stay healthy. Get a multi-vitamin to help. Don't cut fat completely out of your diet. Instead, eat healthy fats, like avocados and olive oil.
