Step 1
Decide why you want it. This will guide you on where to buy one. Halloween costume wigs can be bought inexpensively at costume shops or discounts stores. If your wig is going to serve as a natural-looking replacement for your natural hair, go with high-end wig shops or brand names that have been around for ages. Don't be afraid of the price. The best wigs have the highest cost but it's an investment that will pay back handsomely.
-
Step 2
Figure out length, color and style. Close your eyes and picture yourself with any hairstyle you could have in the world. Pick that wig and go for it. You may get to stop here, but if not, find something in between your dream style and the style you are used to. That will give you less of a shock. See several styles and online wig shops in Resources below.

Step 3
Test the hair quality. Run a wide-toothed brush through the wig gently. This tests, most importantly, if the hair strands actually stay connected to the wig. It also tests for how well the style holds up. If curls go flat with a single swipe of the brush, put that wig back on the rack.

Step 4
Look at the insides. You want a breathable, elastic head piece that is also secure and doesn't itch. Yes, it's a tall order, but you will also being wearing the thing for long periods and want it as snug and comfortable as possible.

Step 5
Try it on. While buying a wig online is possible, the best way to know if a wig will work for you is to give it a go. If you do buy online, make sure the company has a return policy in case the wig is just wrong. You'll know the minute you put it on your head. If it itches, looks stupid or has you saying how good it will look once you do a million things with it, it is not the wig for you.
