Step 1
Go to your local library. You can borrow books for free, or check out the old books that the library may be selling inexpensively.
-
Step 2
Start a book exchange with friends. Trade books with friends and pass them around until everyone has read them. If this seems like too much effort, simply borrow a book from a friend.
-
Step 3
Search garage sales. You can walk away with books for practically nothing, and you'll be helping people get rid of their old stuff.
-
Step 4
Go to a used book store. You'll find lots of books at reasonable prices. At many stores, you can trade in your old books as well, so you'll be making money back on books that you've already read.
-
Step 5
Buy used books on Ebay or Amazon.com. For great deals, search Ebay for people who are selling lots of books in one shipment.
-
Step 6
If you know anyone that works in the publishing or other book related industries, ask if they can get any books free from work. There are often piles of free books at these companies that are available for employees to take home for free.
-
Step 7
Check discount and secondhand stores for inexpensive books. If you purchase a book at a store that supports charity, you'll get new books and help those in need.

on 12/4/2008 Excellent options! The tip about tapping publishing friends is great. If they'll take you to one of the bookseller conventions (i.e., ABA), even better. I walked away with a pile of free books, even signed ones, from there. Thanks for the useful article!

on 12/3/2008 Great tips! I've gotten the majority of my books at rummage sales, library sales and used books sales. New titles and in great condition.
