How to Prevent Razor Burn

Razor burn is both annoying and unattractive, but it can be easily prevented. See also my article on how to treat razor bumps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean the area before shaving. Keeping the area free from bacteria is effective in preventing infection. The soap also helps the hair soak in the water.

  2. Step 2

When washing the area that you are shaving, massage the soap into it. This helps to clean the area more effectively and helps to open the pores.

  3. Step 3

Keep the water warm. The only time that cold water should be used is when you are finished shaving to close the pores.

  4. Step 4

Let the shaving cream or gel sit on the skin for a minute before shaving to let it absorb on the area and soften the hair. If you get razor bumps often, switch to a shaving cream created for sensitive skin if you are not already using one.

  5. Step 5

Keep the razor blades sharp. Using a dull razor does not cut the hair well and will cause irritation.

Tips & Warnings
  • The best time to shave the bikini area is during or after a bath
  • Avoid shaving against the growth of the hair if you get razor bumps often.
